Who is ICF [and what does the acronym mean]? We are a company filled with people who care deeply about improving lives. ICF started with the founding of the Inner City Fund by a former Tuskegee Airman, Clarence “Lucky” Lester, and three U.S. Department of Defense analysts. Back in 1969, ICF's purpose was to build a company on the principle of creating opportunity for disadvantaged communities in Washington, D.C. and financing minority-owned businesses. Today, our purpose is more globally minded as we seek to build a more prosperous and resilient world for all. Our 7,000+ professionals work with companies, governments, and nonprofit organizations in more than 70 countries to plan, design, and implement transformative projects for equitable, sustainable, thriving communities. But throughout our history we have always been guided by our deeply held values and a common passion for making a difference.
Achieving Transportation Equity: We provide the frameworks, tools, and strategies to achieve equitable outcomes from transportation decisions. Our transportation practice provides a wide array of consulting services and technical assistance to cities, regions, States, and Federal agencies, ranging from policy analysis and research, practitioner training and educational resources, and transportation demand management program operations to environmental analysis and NEPA/CEQA compliance for major roadway and transit projects. We are well versed in the practice of integrating equity considerations into performance-based transportation decision-making for long-range planning and programming, as well hands-on public and stakeholder engagement and quantitative analyses for community impact and Environmental Justice assessments.
Improving Public Health: Transportation agencies are increasingly called on to promote public health through the planning and project development processes. We have leading expertise in the literature, data, and analysis tools needed to link health and transportation. Our experienced practitioners develop transportation options to improve health in any community. Our work is enhanced by the rich array of expertise among ICF's health policy, research, and service delivery professionals working in the US and around the world to improve health outcomes for all people, particularly those who face significant societal barriers associated with demographic characteristics such as income, ethnic/ cultural identity, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, marital status.
Building a Sustainable, Equitable, Low-Carbon Future: Minimizing our footprint on the planet has been a key element of growing our capacity for good. We have held net zero carbon status since 2006 and reduced our greenhouse gas emissions by 31% per employee since 2013. We also advise governments on climate policy, help utilities run energy efficiency programs, and promote initiatives that protect fragile ecosystems and advance resilience within human communities around the world that are most vulnerable to devastating impacts of climate change.
ICF's Corporate Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusiveness: We are at our best when every member of our team feels respected, included, and heard—when everyone can show up as themselves and do their best work every day. Our purpose statement and values correspond directly with how we view the world as people, not just employees. VP of Diversity and Inclusion Demola Sholagbade puts it this way: "Our commitment to inclusion requires continuous growth, and we learn from our experiences and each other. We challenge assumptions, cultivate networks, and deepen our impact to our communities—using the same innovative mindset we apply when helping our clients solve their toughest challenges." We practice inclusive culture and community building through an array of employee networks; build inclusion acumen among all employee through training; recruit, hire, and promote career growth among a diverse talent pool; and continually measure and communicate our progress. We also match employee contributions to equity-oriented nonprofits dollar for dollar and celebrate volunteer community building and advocacy.
